What cars do the Ballon d'Or winners own?

In January, the football world focused its attention on Switzerland as FIFA, the sport's global governing body, unveiled the winner of the Ballon d'Or - the annual award that is given to the player deemed to have been the best on the planet that previous year.

Lionel Messi won this year's prize (the third time in a row he has taken the accolade), with Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta voted second and third respectively.

Of course, these footballers aren't just renowned for their world-class skills on the pitch but also for their enviable lifestyle off it. One area where this is certainly the case is cars. Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta all have a fantastic collection of high-performance vehicles and here's an insight into what they drive when they're not busy playing matches or winning awards.

Lionel Messi

Although Messi is usually seen playing in the famous blue and red kit of Barcelona, it seems that when it comes to cars he prefers them to sport a different colour. While the Argentinean superstar has been spotted behind the wheel of numerous vehicles over the years, including the Audi Q7 and Audi R8, many of them have been white. Among his latest purchases is the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale (which is also white), a high-performance two-seater car that features super-lightweight carbon ceramic brakes and a 4.7 litre V8 engine. With the car capable of going from zero to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and a maximum torque of 520 Nm, it is just as powerful and fast on the road as Messi is on the pitch!

Cristiano Ronaldo

Receiving the second-highest amount of votes in Ballon d'Or awards, Cristiano Ronaldo also has a fantastic car collection. However, given the fact he is paid about £8 million a year from his side Real Madrid (not to mention his lucrative off-pitch deals) that is probably not too much of a surprise. Among the cars the Portuguese striker has been spotted driving are the Maserati GranCabrio, Audi RS6 and Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, with many of these featuring a CR7 personalised licence plate referring to his initials and the squad number he wears when playing. Ronaldo has also been seen in a Ferrari 599 GTO. Just 599 models of this limited edition car have been produced, with the vehicle powered by a V12 engine and capable of reaching a top speed of 208 mph.

Andres Iniesta

Third place in the Ballon d'Or awards went to Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta, who has also been seen driving some fantastic cars over the years. Among the vehicles he has been spotted in is the Audi A7 and, although it's not known for certain which version he was driving, the SE trim contains fantastic features such as adaptive air suspension, 19-inch alloys and Dual-zone electronic climate control. The S line Plus model, meanwhile, comes with 21-inch alloy wheels, exquisite leather upholstery made in the Verano region of Italy and a satellite navigation system.

All three of these athletes play at the very highest level of the sport, but no matter whether you compete in prestigious tournaments like the Champions League or play in the lower leagues, if you're a footballer it's important that you have an adequate car insurance policy.

Regardless of whether you own an Audi, a Maserati or something a bit more basic, taking out a footballer car insurance policy through a high net worth insurance broker should mean you are financially protected when behind the wheel, leaving you free to concentrate on playing and reaching the dizzy heights of Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta etc.
